With environmental responsibility playing an increasingly important role in the development of modern consumer devices, LG Electronics has turned the ecological spotlight onto its new Flatron widescreen TFT monitor, which the South Korean company claims is the greenest computer screen the world has ever gazed upon.

Arriving as the latest entrant into LG’s existing Flatron line, the rather snappily titled W2252TE offers prospective consumers the combined performance and environmentally-conscious appeal of 22-inch personal viewing and significantly reduced power consumption.

According to LG, its newest Flatron is “the world’s most energy efficient monitor,” leading the way in the world of eco-friendly screens by delivering a notable power usage reduction of 45 percent, which equates to a substantial 40 watt drop over similar devices.

“The W2252TE gives consumers the chance to work, play games, watch movies or surf the internet, safe in the knowledge that they are doing as much as possible to help reduce their impact on the environment,” commented LG marketing manager Fiona Landsberg.

From a technical perspective, the W2252TE provides a native screen resolution of 1680x1050, along with a dynamic (DFC) contrast ration of 10,000:1, a 170 degree viewing angle, and a 2ms response time. The W2252TE’s only slight performance disappointment exists through a brightness stat of just 250cd.

While certainly a decent enough prospect -- especially given its markedly reduced energy requirements -- LG’s new monitor also contains integrated circuitry enabling 4:3 aspect ratio content to be displayed using the 22-inch screen’s entire width.

However, it remains to be seen exactly how that display shift translates to the widescreen format and whether it will subsequently compromise the true screen image in any way by employing a stretch-to-fit method, expanding and cropping, or some other (hopefully more effective) solution.

LG has indicated that its new 22-inch Flatron W2252TE will hit the market sometime during this coming August. Pricing for the world’s greenest monitor has yet to be confirmed by the manufacturer… but what price on saving the rainforests, eh?
